Notes from the Junior High

It is hard to believe that this week is the mid-term for the first quarter. How the time does fly by. Here at the Junior High the students have been busy! They are finished up with the fall standardized NWEA (MAPS) testing last week. In athletics both our volleyball and football teams have had their first contests with the volleyball team already competing in two contests. Our first home contests will be this week with the volleyball team hosting South Platte on the 23rd at 1:00, and the football team will host Ogallala on September 25th at 3:00 pm.
A couple of other items of interest are the L to J quizzes, and the use of student binders. Every Friday students in all three grades take a vocabulary quiz in homeroom from a list of vocabulary words. The list includes words from all curricular areas. The students are tested on ten words from the master list. The class with the best score overall then receives a recess that day. So far the 8th grade has won the first week and the 7th grade the second week. Everyone is excited about the opportunity of a recess, and the competition has been fierce each week!
Another new junior high procedure is our use of student binders. Every student has an organizational binder that they are required to bring to all classes each day. Students store assignments and other important things in their binders. I have noticed and have heard from the teachers that students are becoming much more organized and have more consistently come to class prepared. We celebrate that and will continue to help the students become better achievers.
As always we invite parents and patrons to visit the Junior High and see all of the exciting things going on here.
