After our time at the Mari Sandoz center was complete, we hurried along to Red Cloud Indian School located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This private school located on the reservation is attended by students of all backgrounds, but the vast majority have Lakota ancestry. Our students were given a short tour of the facility and the school church. We learned about Lakota culture, history, and steps the school is taking to integrate Lakota culture into school curriculum. After the tour was over, our student council met with several Red Cloud student council members. They taught us how to play a traditional Lakota game called "the hand game". Our kids eventually got the hang of the game and had a great time hanging out with the Red Cloud representatives. We also extended the invitation for Red Cloud students to come and participate in the sesquicentennial celebration at Ash Hollow this summer.
All in all it was a great day for learning about western Nebraska's history and more about the people who first called this place home.
