The top two spellers from each grade from sixth through
eighth participated in the oral bee held on the afternoon of February 27,
2017. Mr. Spady was the emcee,
pronouncing the words and reading the rules to the spellers and the gathered
audience. Mrs. Beberniss, Miss Johnson,
and Mrs. Swafford were the judges.
The spellers’ names were drawn at random so they went in the
following order: Chesney Stanczyk, Maddie Lake, Jena Spady, Chandler Pollard,
Madi Rauch, and Mallory Zorn. Maddie
Lake, Jena Spady, and Mallory Zorn went out in the first round. Chandler went out during the second
round. Chesney and Madi went several
rounds until round twelve wherein Chesney prevailed, having spelled
“documentary” and then “guardian” to take the win. The words that tripped up the spellers
follow: absurd, coffee, soprano, prowess, mirthful, vigorously, winsome,
mundane, melodramatic, revelation, and escarpment.
Congratulations to the winners as well as everyone who
participated.
