January 28th marked the third official meet of the 2017 speech season for the Garden County High School speech students. Traveling to the Perkins County Invite in Grant, NE to compete against 24 other schools and hundreds of entries, the students scored well and experienced tough competition.

Competing for her first time with an entertainment speech, Bailey Miller brought home a sixth place medal as she was competing against 23 other speakers. Beginner’s luck, I think not. She will be a force to be reckoned with as she continues to polish her speech for greatness. In the extemporaneous category, Peyton Stanczyk scored well as he got back into the groove of his quick researching, writing and memorizing type of speech contest. The competition was steep and he just barely missed the cut for the final round. Morgan Wills also scored well against seasoned humorous speakers and was just points from the final round cut off. His dramatization in his piece is coming along well and before long he will be earning medals at each meet.

Kayleen Sullivan, a seasoned speaker, struggled against competitors that already had their entire speeches memorized. Give her time and she will be right up there in the higher ranks as she masters the memorization of her speech soon. Attending her first meet ever, Kaylee Bell got her jitters out and scored well for a novice speaker while competing with some veteran humorous students. Along for the ride and observation of their teammates and competition, Spencer Leach and DJ Miller hope to be performing their duet acting at the upcoming Sutherland Invite scheduled for February 4th. Spencer will also be competing with an oral interpretation of a serious prose piece.
