Educational Insights
Educational Insights “…developing individuals to meet the challenges of a diverse society.” Typically, I don’t write articles during the summer months. However, this past week our summer program (CHAMPS) ended and it seemed fitting to recognize all the amazing staff we had for this six week program provided by a 21st Community Century Learning Center grant. Coordinator, Carrie Hoagland, recruited some excellent folks to work with these K-5 students! Kim Basham, Diana Paisley, Tracey Boren, Mila Abbot, Brandi Koppmann, Candy Spady, Logan Douglas, Shelby McKay, and Cindy Bolton all worked together to provide a fun, safe, and educational environment for the students. The participants learned much about our local culture and history. An Ash Hollow field trip enhanced their experience! Mrs. Hoagland had 55 students signed up this year, a record high! Watching them enjoy water balloons and the slip and slide that final day made my heart smile! The summer food service program will end July 31st. Special thanks to Dana Fischer, Food Service Supervisor, and her competent crew for providing free healthy breakfasts and lunches all through June and July. This USDA supported program (based on high poverty levels) began in Garden County in 2005. The student participation has doubled over the past nine years, serving a record high of 102 for lunch one day in June! Garden County residents are extremely fortunate to have both of these federally supported programs available and led by such outstanding, dedicated staff members. Special thanks and hats off to all the participants and staff involved in these positive programs: great work! Thank you, also, to the patient custodial staff in working around their schedules and keeping their environment clean. You are all appreciated. -Dr. Paula Sissel Garden County Schools Superintendent/Elementary Principal psissel@gceagles.org  more
