This week the Garden County 6th grade participated in their 2nd Off-the-Page lesson of the year. The group started by sorting through the plants they preserved in the first lesson and saw how nicely the traditional plant presses worked. After that, this group learned about a few of the Native American nations Lewis and Clark met on their trip and how different their lives were. One way they got to experience this was by spending some time looking for animal tracks down by the river. Students learned about how tracking is still used in the world today, common animals in Garden County, and different types of track patterns. Although it was cold and the ground was frozen, the kids did get a chance to learn about a historical skill and one group of people who helped develop it.

Jena Spady, 8th grader, collected hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves for her Citizenship Bingo assignment. Spady planned and organized the project. Donations poured in from generous members of the Lewellen, Lisco, and Oshkosh communities. Spady was able to collect 378 items. Items will be donated to the Garden County Elementary School, VOA, and the North Platte Homeless Shelter. Good work Jena!

On Friday, September 14th, all 8th graders were trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). According to the American Heart Association, "CPR, if administered immediately after cardiac arrest can double or triple a person's chance of survival. About 90 percent of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest die." 8th Civics students are participating in activities throughout the year that encourages engagement with the community and to become more involved citizens.

Posted on 11/02/2018
What is "alternative education?" An alternative school is one that offers the same basic curriculum as the "traditional" school but uses alternative delivery methods. While the structure of the alternative program may vary from site to site, there are common effective characteristics which have been identified in alternative schools: Small class size, supportive environment, autonomy and democratic structure, accountability and constant evaluations, opportunities for community involvement and a school environment.   more
